The best cold call examples are short: your name and company, a specific reason for calling, a question inside the first 20 seconds, and a next step with a day attached. Load one of the eight annotated calls below, or paste your own script, and get a score with specific fixes.

Cold call script grader
The call most people write first. It talks for a minute, says nothing about the person and asks for nothing specific.
Runs in your browser. Nothing you type is stored or sent. The rules and points are callflo.ai's own checklist, not an industry standard. It reads your words, so it cannot tell whether your list is scrubbed or the call will land. The names and numbers in the examples are samples.
Key takeaways
- In Gong's analysis of 90,380 cold calls, calls that gave a reason for calling had a 2.1 times higher success rate.
- In a Baylor test of 6,264 calls by real estate agents, 28 percent were answered and it took 330 calls to book one appointment.
- On a telemarketing call to a consumer, the caller must give their name, the entity and a phone number or address. Put them in the script.
- On consumer sales calls, the FTC wants the seller, the purpose and the product disclosed before the pitch.
| Situation | Goal of the call | Opening reason | Next step to ask for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Service to a local business | A short site visit | Something local you noticed | 15 minutes on a named morning |
| Trigger event | A short demo | The public news about them | 20 minutes on a named afternoon |
| Referral | A first conversation | Who sent you and why | A call tomorrow |
| Product to a past customer | A yes or a clean no | The earlier purchase, and that it is a sale | A scheduled slot, with terms sent first |
| Follow up on a quote | A decision either way | The quote and its date | 10 minutes to go through it |
| Front desk | The right name and a time | The topic, said honestly | A better time to call back |
| Voicemail | A callback or a known name | One specific fact | A named day, and your number twice |
Cold call examples, annotated
A good cold call example shows you the order of events more than the magic words. Each one below follows the same order: who, why, question, listen, next step, number. Load any of them into the grader to read the note beside each line. Change the details before you dial, because a script about somebody else's kitchen will not survive contact.
The office cleaning call, before and after
The weak version in the grader runs about 100 words without letting anyone in. It never says who is calling, and it ends on "let me know", which is how you ask a stranger to do your follow-up for you. Here is the same seller with a reason to be on the phone.
Sample call: the same call, fixed
The trigger event call
Something public just changed for the person you are calling: a new location, a new hire, a move. That change gives you the reason, and it is easy to verify before you dial.
Sample call: trigger event: they just expanded
The voicemail
Most of your dials end here, so write this part too. Pew found that eight in ten Americans do not generally answer a cell call from an unknown number. Keep it under 30 seconds and say your number twice.
Sample call: voicemail after no answer
The referral and front desk calls are in the grader's dropdown. Real estate is its own world, with expired listings, FSBOs and specific Do Not Call traps. If that is you, use the real estate cold calling scripts builder instead of adapting these.
What is a sales script?
A sales script is a written plan for what you will say on a sales call: how you open, what you ask, how you answer common objections and how you end. A cold call script is the version for someone with no prior contact, which is how Merriam-Webster defines a cold call. Think of it as the map, not the speech. You should know it well enough to leave it the moment the other person says something interesting.
How to create a sales script
To create a sales script, pick one type of person and one goal for the call, then write only the lines that move toward that goal. Read it out loud with a timer, cut what you stumble on, and write the three objections you hear most. Five steps cover it.
- 1
Choose one person and one goal
An office manager and a homeowner need different calls. The goal is usually a next conversation, rarely a sale. - 2
Write your reason first
If you cannot finish "I'm calling because" with something specific to them, fix your list before your script. - 3
Write two questions they can answer quickly
Ask what they use now, or what goes wrong with it. Avoid questions that only have one polite answer. - 4
Write the ending
Write the ask with a day and a length, then your number. An ending is the part most scripts leave to chance. - 5
Say it out loud, then grade it
Your eyes will forgive a sentence your mouth will not. Paste the result into the grader above.
What the grader checks, and why
The grader checks seven things worth 100 points. These rules are our own checklist for a script on paper, written from the rules and studies in this section. No study proves that a 90 outperforms a 70. A high score means the pieces are there, and the delivery is still up to you.
| Rule | Points | How it is tested |
|---|---|---|
| States who you are | 20 | Your name and your company in the first 40 words. Name alone earns half. |
| Gives a reason for calling | 15 | A plain reason in the first 80 words, such as "I'm calling because". |
| Asks a question early | 15 | A question in the first 40 words earns full points. By word 75 earns half. |
| Length in spoken seconds | 15 | Your lines take 60 seconds or less to say. Up to 90 seconds earns half. Under 15 words is too thin to grade. |
| Talk ratio | 10 | One to four statements per question. Up to six, or more questions than statements, earns half. |
| Has a next step | 15 | An ask with a day, a time or a length. A vague next step earns half. |
| Contact details | 10 | A phone number or a postal address. An email address alone does not count. |
What the data supports, and where it disagrees with us
Gong, which sells call analysis software, studied 90,380 connected cold callsand defined success as a held follow-up meeting. Treat these as a vendor's correlations.
Now the awkward part. Gong also found that successful callers talked more than unsuccessful ones, and that the number of questions showed no statistical difference. That is why the talk ratio is only worth 10 points here, and why a script made entirely of questions loses points too. Long calls are not the problem either: our 60 second limit covers your scripted lines, and a call that goes well will outrun it.
Gong's best opener, "How have you been?" at 6.6 times the baseline, is one we left out of the examples. It implies you have met, and you have not. It may work. It is also the kind of line you would not want read back to you, so that one is your call.
Outbound sales call script examples by goal
An outbound sales call script changes with what you are asking for. A call to get a meeting ends on a date. A call to sell over the phone has to put the price and terms on the table. A follow up call has to make saying no easy. These last two get the most wrong, so here they are in full.
Script for selling a product over the phone
A script for selling a product over the phone to a consumer has a legal order of events. The FTC says that before any sales pitch the caller must disclose the identity of the seller, that the purpose of the call is to sell, and the nature of the goods or services. Most business-to-business calls are exempt from that rule, with exceptions.
Sample call: selling a product over the phone
Follow up sales call script
A follow up sales call script should give the person an easy way to say the deal is dead, because a clear no beats three more weeks of chasing. Name the quote and its date so they can place you. For the email version, the follow up sales email writer builds the message and a dated cadence.
Sample call: follow up sales call: quote went quiet
The rules a cold call script has to meet
A cold call to a consumer has to follow federal rules on hours, Do Not Call and identification, and your state may add more. We read these in November 2026. This is general information, so confirm your own setup with a local attorney before you start a campaign.
- Hours: no telephone solicitations before 8am or after 9pm at the called party's location.
- Do Not Call: scrub against the national registry, using a version no more than 31 days old, and keep your own do-not-call list. Honor a request within 10 business days and keep it for 5 years.
- Identification: the caller's name, the entity and a phone number or address. It is why contact details are a graded rule here.
- Penalties: the FTC lists 53,088 dollars per violation for calling someone who asked you not to.
- AI voices: the FCC ruled in February 2024 that AI-generated voices count as artificial voices. A marketing call using one needs prior express written consent, so it cannot run on a cold list. The automated calling rules check walks through it.
Do you need sales script software?
You probably do not need sales script software until several people are calling from the same script. One person with a document and a timer can do all of this. Paid tools earn their cost when a manager needs to change one line for ten reps, or wants to compare what was said on recorded calls. If you are the only caller, spend that money on a better list.
The call you are not ready for
You leave 40 voicemails on Tuesday. On Wednesday, during your next session, someone calls back. Your number goes to voicemail, and that person has now done exactly what you asked and got nothing. In the Baylor test, one appointment took 330 dials, so a missed callback is an expensive thing to lose. We wrote a whole piece on answering cold calling callbacks.
Sample call: a prospect calling back while you are dialing
That is the job callflo.ai does: it answers the inbound line, takes the details and sends you a summary, a transcript and a follow-up text to the caller. Starter is 39 dollars a month on annual billing or 49 dollars monthly, with 120 minutes and 98 cents for each extra minute. Calendar booking is a VIP feature.
It will not make your cold calls on Starter. Outbound campaigns are VIP only, at 697 dollars a month on annual billing or 997 dollars monthly, and an AI voice calling a cold list runs into the consent rule above. If you dial a few numbers a week and pick up your own phone, you do not need any of this. If the callbacks land while you are dialing, you might.
