For 60 calls a month at 3 minutes each, the cheapest published option is SkipCalls Starter at $29.99 a month. Prices read November 2026.

Runs entirely in your browser: no API calls, nothing stored or sent. Prices read from each vendor's own page in November 2026, before taxes. Setup fees are one time and not in the monthly figure.

Do not know your numbers? Your phone bill or carrier portal has the call count. For length, 3 minutes is a placeholder, so time 20 real calls if you can. Long calls change the order: at 6 minutes, per-call plans climb up the ranking and per-minute plans fall.

Key takeaways

  • The lowest entry fee on these pages is $19 a month (AMBS AI Starter), and it bills every minute at $0.79.
  • At 60 calls of 3 minutes, SkipCalls Starter is cheapest at $29.99 and callflo.ai Starter ranks 6th of 16 at $107.80, month to month.
  • The cheapest live person at that volume is MAP Communications at $250.50 a month. A message-only service costs $144.40.
  • 10 of the 16 options mention a free trial. callflo.ai does not offer one.

How to work out what an answering service costs

Multiply calls by average length to get your minutes. For each plan, take the monthly fee and add the extra calls or minutes past the included volume, times the overage rate. The cheapest plan on the ladder is your price. Divide by calls and you have the cost per answered call.

Say you get 60 calls of 3 minutes, which is 180 minutes. MAP Communications Business is 179 dollars with 125 minutes included. The other 55 minutes cost 1 dollar 30 each, which adds 71 dollars 50. That is 250 dollars 50, or about 4 dollars 18 per call. Note that a bigger plan is not always cheaper: the tool checks every rung.

Per minute, per call, flat or message-only: which is cheapest?

On published prices, flat and per-call AI plans are cheapest at almost every volume, and live per-call service is the most expensive. The table above shows the gap: at 150 calls, live per-minute service starts at 576 dollars, and the cheapest flat plan is 29 dollars 99. They are not the same product, so the price gap is only half the decision.

  • Live, per minute. A person answers, and you pay for their time. Long calls hurt, and short-call rounding can too.
  • Live, per call. Cost does not move with length, so it suits long intake calls. Smith.ai is the published example, at 300 dollars for 30 calls.
  • Message-only. A person takes the message and sends it to you. ReceptionHQ MessageExpress is from 25 dollars a month plus 1 dollar 99 per call, and it is the only message-only plan we found with a public price.
  • AI, per minute or per call. Low fee, small bundle, cheap overage. Check what happens when the bundle ends.
  • AI, flat. One fee and a stated limit or none. The question is what "fair usage" means on your account, so ask before you rely on it.

The billing differences get a fuller treatment in the AI receptionist vs answering service cost breakdown, including how services count a minute. This page is for the shopper who wants the lowest honest number.

Which affordable answering services offer a free trial?

Of the 16 options priced here, 10 mention a free trial, usually 7 or 14 days. Terms differ on the details that matter: whether a card is required, and whether the trial stops at a call or minute cap. Upfirst stops at 14 days or 100 calls, and Specialty Answering Service at two weeks or 200 minutes.

How to use a free trial answering service properly

A trial is the only cheap way to measure your real month. Forward one line for a full week that includes a Monday. Then read the usage page for three numbers: calls, billed minutes, and how many of those calls were spam. Put those into the calculator. Call the line yourself at 7pm and ask something awkward, because that is the call you are buying coverage for.

Call answering service cost: what the cheap plans leave out

The monthly number leaves out four things that can change the choice. Read each plan for these before you compare the totals, because two plans at the same price can do very different work.

  • Rounding. AMBS rounds up to 30-second increments, so a real month bills above talk time. callflo.ai bills by the second.
  • Setup fees. AMBS charges a flat 85 dollars once per account. Most others on this list state none.
  • Hours. MessageExpress lists business-hours receptionists, with after-hours as an option. If your calls come at night, confirm the price first.
  • What happens on the call. A message costs less than a booking. Our Smith.ai pricing breakdown covers its per-call add-ons, and the Ruby pricing breakdown covers its overage rates.

What a cheap plan costs when your calls double

A cheap plan is priced for your quiet month. So the calculator also prices each option at double your calls, on the plan you picked. Here is that row at 60 calls of 3 minutes, against a month at 120 calls. Spring for a leasing office and the first cold snap for a heating company both look like this.

Option and plan60 calls120 callsChange
SkipCalls, Starter$29.99$29.99+$0.00
Rosie, Professional$49.00$149.00+$100.00
Upfirst, Premium$59.95$89.95+$30.00
callflo.ai, Starter$107.80$284.20+$176.40
ReceptionHQ MessageExpress, MessageExpress$144.40$263.80+$119.40
MAP Communications, Business$250.50$484.50+$234.00
Month to month, 3 minutes a call. Stays on the same plan unless that plan has no published overage. Same logic as the calculator, November 2026 prices.

In a month like that, you could simply move to the next plan before it starts, and some of these bills would shrink. The point of the column is the size of the surprise if you do not. For a broader buying checklist, see the guide to choosing a small business answering service.

Is outsourced call answering worth it at the cheap end?

Outsourced call answering at the cheap end is worth it when an unanswered call costs you more than the plan does. The comparison is usually a missed job or a staff wage. BLS puts median receptionist pay at $38,010 a year on 2025 data. At 60 calls a month, even the most expensive row above is a fraction of that hire.

Voicemail is the free alternative, and it has a leak. In CallRail's survey of 1,000 US consumers, 42 percent said they leave a voicemail when a business does not answer, and 82 percent said they would call a competitor. If you get ten calls a month and they can all wait, voicemail is still the cheapest answer, and no vendor on this page will tell you that.

Answering service software: two different products

Answering service software means one of two things. The first answers your calls itself, which is what the AI plans in this post do. The second is the platform a call center runs on, with operator screens and scripts. Amtelco sells that kind. If you run one business and want your phone answered, you want the first. The second only makes sense if you employ the operators.

White label answering service

A white label answering service lets you resell answering under your own brand. A marketing agency or IT provider buys the service, sets its own price and bills its own clients. That is a different thing from answering in a business's name, which most services do as standard. Ask who controls the client phone numbers, who writes each script and who takes the support call at night. callflo.ai has no white label plan.

Where callflo.ai lands in the ranking

callflo.ai is not the cheapest answering service, so here is where it does and does not make sense. Starter is 49 dollars month to month, or 39 dollars on annual billing, with 120 minutes included and extra minutes at 98 cents. At 30 calls of 3 minutes it ties Rosie at 49 dollars. At 60 calls it ranks 6th of 16, at 107 dollars 80.

Past about 120 minutes a month, Starter gets expensive fast. At 300 calls it costs 813 dollars 40 and every other AI plan here costs less, so pick one of those if price is the whole decision. It also has no free trial. There is a satisfaction guarantee on the first payment instead, and you can call the demo line before you buy. Live transfer to a person is on the VIP plan, not Starter.

It fits a line under about 120 minutes a month where you want it live quickly and you want every call logged. It answers 24/7, handles many calls at once, learns your business from your website, and gives you a summary and transcript of each call. You keep your number. Plans are on the callflo.ai pricing page.

Hear it answer before you compare the price

Call callflo.ai's own AI agent and ask it anything about your business. When you are ready, pick a plan: no setup fee, no contract, and you do not pay unless you are satisfied.

Starter is $39 a month on annual billing. Live on your line about 5 minutes after you sign up.

FAQ

It depends on your volume. At 60 calls of 3 minutes a month, SkipCalls Starter was cheapest at $29.99 on November 2026 prices, and it is an AI service. The cheapest live person at that volume was MAP Communications at $250.50 a month.

The lowest published monthly fee in November 2026 was $19, before usage. A month of 60 calls at 3 minutes ran from $29.99 to $645 across the 16 plans we priced. AI plans sit at the low end and live per-call service at the high end.

Yes. PATLive and Specialty Answering Service offer 14 days, Upfirst offers 14 days or 100 calls, and Rosie, Dialzara and NextPhone offer 7 days. Terms such as card requirements differ by vendor, so read them first. callflo.ai has no free trial.

ReceptionHQ MessageExpress is the published example we found, from $25 a month plus $1.99 per call answered as of November 2026. It lists business-hours receptionists, with after-hours answering as an option. Most other services quote message-taking as part of a per-minute plan.

Per minute is usually cheaper for short calls, and per call is usually cheaper for long ones. Multiply your calls by your average length and run both through the calculator. Check how each plan rounds, because rounding can add to per-minute bills.

They are worth it when a missed call costs more than the plan. Check the overage rate, the hours covered and what the service does on the call. If you get only a few calls a month and they can all wait, voicemail may be enough.
