A cheap business phone can cost nothing for one person: free Google Voice gives you a separate number, with real limits. For three people with texting, the lowest printed total we found in November 2026 was 25 dollars a month. Enter your team below for a ranked true cost.

Key takeaways

  • For one person with no toll-free number, free Google Voice costs $0. It has no 911 support, and Google says a business account is often a better fit for work.
  • For three people with texting on annual billing, Grasshopper Solo Plus is lowest at $25 a month. Nextiva Core is next at $45.
  • The headline can undersell the bill. Quo Starter is $15 per user, but three people with text registration come to $49.63 a month in year one.
  • Google Voice does not offer 1-800 numbers, so a toll-free requirement removes the cheapest options.

How to work out what a cheap business phone really costs

Multiply the price by the people on the plan, or use the flat price if the plan has one. Add monthly add-ons, multiply by 12, add one-time fees, then divide by 12. That is your true monthly cost for year one.

Quo shows why the extra steps matter. Three people on annual billing are 45 dollars a month. Quo's page lists a 19.50 dollar one-time text registration and a messaging fee of 1.50 to 3 dollars a month. Using the 3 dollar top of that range, the year costs 595.50 dollars, or 49.63 dollars a month.

Flat plans change the math as you add people. Grasshopper Small Business is 55 dollars at annual billing whether you have five people or ten. Quo Starter at ten people is at least 153 dollars a month. Per-user prices look small only while the team is.

Free and nearly free options, honestly

The only free option in this comparison is a personal Google Voice account, and it suits one person testing a separate number. Staying on your existing cell also adds no bill, but your personal number ends up on your listing. Both work until callers or staff need more from the line.

  • Free Google Voice. It includes call forwarding, voicemail transcripts and mobile apps. Google says texts are free to US, Canadian and Puerto Rican numbers, but only for interactive conversations. It lacks 3-way calling, call recording, desk phones, 911 support and auto attendants.
  • Google Voice Starter, standalone. It is 10 dollars a month for one US Gmail user, and it adds 911 support and desk phones. The 20 dollar Standard version adds a phone menu.
  • Google Voice for a team. Several users need the Workspace route. Google says Workspace starts at 6 dollars per user, so the lowest combined price is 16 dollars per user. Starter stops at 10 users.

Google is also clear about its own free tier. Its help page says a business account is often a better fit for work than a personal one. Free is a reasonable test. It is a thin plan for the number on your truck. And if you need toll-free, skip this whole family: Google says Voice does not offer 1-800 numbers.

Should I get a business phone?

Get a business phone when you need a shared line, a toll-free number, a phone menu, or separate records for the business. If you work alone and answer your own cell, you may not need one yet. A separate number on its own will not make anyone answer it.

Stay on your cell or a free number if

  • You are the only person answering calls.
  • You do not mind customers having that number.
  • You do not need a toll-free number or a phone menu.

Pay for a plan if

  • Two or more people need to share calls, voicemail or texts.
  • The number has to stay with the business when someone leaves.
  • You send business texts and want registration handled properly.
  • You need a menu. Our phone tree builder shows how long yours would take to hear.

Which cheap business phone service fits which team?

A small team with basic needs usually lands on a flat plan or the lowest per-user tier. The cheapest service changes with team size and with one or two needs, so check these against your own numbers in the tool.

Moving an existing number is usually part of the deal. Our number transfer guide covers the timing, and Ooma lists free number transfer on its plans page. Ask every other vendor about it before you sign.

What a cheap business phone does not do

You pay 25 dollars for a shared number. On Tuesday at 11am all three of you are on jobs. The new customer hears five rings and a voicemail greeting, and calls the next name on the list. The phone plan worked exactly as sold. It rang.

A phone plan gives calls somewhere to land. Answering them is a separate job. If that is your real problem, a second phone will not fix it. Our missed calls guide compares the fixes, and the cheap answering service calculator ranks that side of the budget the same way this tool ranks phone plans.

Be clear about where callflo.ai sits. It is not a phone system and it does not replace any plan on this page. It is an AI receptionist that answers on a number you keep: your carrier forwards some or all of your calls to it, as the keep-your-number guide explains. Starter handles answering, texting and lead capture for 39 dollars a month on annual billing, or 49 dollars month to month, with 120 minutes and extra minutes at 0.98 dollars. On VIP it also books appointments, takes payments and transfers calls live. Plans are on the pricing page.

It does not fit everyone. If you answer nearly every call yourself, you only need the cheapest number that works. A 25 dollar plan plus Starter is 64 dollars a month before extra minutes, so it has to save more than that in calls you would have lost.

FAQ

It depends on team size. In November 2026, free Google Voice was the lowest option for one person, at $0. For three people with texting on annual billing, Grasshopper Solo Plus had the lowest printed total at $25 a month, before taxes and fees.

Get one if people share the line, or if you need a toll-free number, a phone menu, or a number that stays with the business. If you work alone and answer your own calls, your cell or a free number may be enough for now.

A free personal account gives one person a separate number, but it has no 911 support, desk phones, call recording or phone menu. Google says a business account is often a better fit for work. Paid single-user plans started at $10 a month in November 2026.

No. Google's setup help says Google Voice does not offer 1-800 numbers. If you need toll-free, compare plans from vendors such as Quo, Ooma or MightyCall, which list toll-free numbers on their plans.

Headline prices leave things out. Common additions are annual-only pricing, seat minimums, activation fees, text registration, and taxes and regulatory fees. Ask the vendor for the full monthly bill in writing before you sign.

No. callflo.ai is an AI receptionist, not a phone system. It answers calls forwarded from the number you keep, so you still need a phone line or plan. Starter is $39 a month on annual billing or $49 month to month, with 120 minutes included.
